Boost Your Website's SEO with the Power of Blogging: Understanding the Importance of Blogs for Search Engine Optimization

Ryan Stack • Apr 05, 2023

It's 2023 - aren't blogs so early 2000's? Nope, not even close! Blogging is still alive and well as a tool for search engine optimization (SEO). This applies to large and small companies and is still one of the underutilized tools that can help you boost your website's SEO rankings.

Search engine optimization is all about improving the visibility of websites in search engines to increase the amount of organic traffic they receive over time. Search engine algorithms have changed since the early days, but one thing that remains constant is that content is still an essential ingredient for success.

Not Convinced? - I get it - but here are some stats that may sway you:

  • According to study from HubSpot, the average company that leverages blogs on their site have 55% more visitors than websites that don't blog
  • Additionally, the HubSpot study found that companies that blog receive 97% more links

Take off your technical SEO hat for a minute and think logically about why sites that "blog" have more site visitors and more websites linking to them. (not everything needs to be so technical and over analyzed)

More Content

You've heard content is king - well more content can be king too. Don't judge yet - think logically, if a competitor that wants to rank for the search term "SEO company near me" has a website that only has their services, contact info, company info and a total of 5 pages - and another SEO company has their basic service pages and 50 articles talking about SEO - including topics like how to rank higher in search, how to improve link-building, the importance of internal linking to boost SEO, what site might you think google would rank higher? Yes, this is an overly simplified example, but logically you can understand how one site is more complete in helping searchers find the answers to what they are searching for, an the other site simply lacks the content needed to answer a search query.

We've seen time and time again that sites that create consistent content based around the industry their in, the services they provide and try their best to produce consistent and helpful content benefit far more than the websites that try and optimize a few pages and produce content sporadically.

In other words - if a site has more information, the odds are higher that the information will rank for what someone is searching for.

Increased Internal Linking

Internal linking is another important factor when it comes to SEO. It helps structure your website in a way that makes it easier for search engine algorithms to read and understand the content on your pages. When you link related topics together, you create a more structured (and easier to navigate) environment within your site - which sends positive signals to Google's crawlers and increases the chance of higher rankings.

Blogging also helps you add internal links to other pages on your site that you may have previously overlooked - this is especially useful with long-form content, as it can be hard to link up multiple related topics together.

Again, lets say you are a company wanting to rank for web designers near me and you have a web design page under services. Yes, explaining that service and information about your web design services is helpful, but is there any content pointing to this page and referencing this page? If not, Google could see this as a page with low importance. On the flip side, if there are 20 different web design articles referring to your web design services page, this gives a heightened level of importance - again, simply because many pages are referencing that service page.

Featured Snippets

Ya know, that little piece of content that appears at the top of a search engine result page - the one you're constantly competing for? Well, more and more we're seeing websites rank in these featured snippets because they are creating good quality content. This could be blogs that address specific answers to search questions or provide more detailed information to a specific query.

Blogging allows you to quickly and easily answer questions that people are searching for, giving you the chance to get on page one - which can result in more website clicks, leads, and sales.

Did i mention, it appears at the very top of search? Yes, you can add Q and A's to your main services page but you can't talk about all aspects of that service on a single page without the page scrolling on and on for hours - blogs help you add information related to site pages and expand past just the service info you provide.

Rank for More Phrases

Adding blog articles will allow your site to begin increasing the amount of search terms it ranks for. If you study SEO long enough - you realize how many alternative keyword phrases there are for search terms you want to rank for and where you might rank for 1 or 2, you may miss the other 50 that are important. Expanding the amount of search terms you can rank for will increase the amount of organic website clicks you get.

Creating content for keyphrase variations, related topics, and other related niche phrases can help your site rank for more than just one or two phrases - meaning more potential visitors to your site (and hopefully increasing sales).

Don't Know Where to Start?

Nobody does! lol - the key is to start. If you haven't figured this out yet by this point in the article, the key is starting and doing in and of itself will begin improving your overall site ranking and traffic. Companies tend to have paralysis by analysis or are afraid that if they don't think about all 200 ranking factors that they will fail in their SEO - and the honest truth is that if you do your best to create and publish content that you believe will be helpful to your site visitors and those searching online, then overtime you will find this to be extremely beneficial. Be honest, be authentic, be helpful and be consistent - perhaps not your Google Analytics, Chat GPT, Google web bot answer you may have wanted to hear - but it works!

What About All That SEO Stuff?

Okay Yes - to all the SEOers out there, to your credit, you can do things to enhance what we talked about in this article. Things like optimizing page titles and descriptions, alt text, backlinks, page load speed, social media engagement, UX - yes it all plays a role and could enhance your overall rankings. I'm not discounting the advanced details - but I am saying that content alone plays a HUGE role in how well your site will rank.

But to my point in this article, if you're not blogging (or think publishing articles) - start. If you started but haven't blogged in a while - start to create content weekly. It's one of the best things by far you can do to improve your overall site traffic and google rankings.

Quick Q and A about Blogs

  • Q: Is blogging time consuming?

Not really.  Starting off you can focus on creating content you're knowledgeable about and you may also be able to schedule other employees to contribute their expertise.  You can also leverage writing tools like Grammarly or higher a copywriting service to do scheduled articles so you create consistency, and then you can add to the articles they produce when you have free time.  There are tons of agencies that offer blogging subscriptions out there - find one that fits your style if time is an issue.

  • What posts should I write?

Start with the questions your target audience is asking.  Take a look at social media, search engines and forums to get ideas for topics - but be sure you focus on content that adds value to your potential customers rather than just trying to rank for search terms and clickbait titles.  You also want to talk about your service - but make sure it's helpful and adds value.

  • How often should I post?

As much as you can without sacrificing quality.  Scheduling 1-2 blog posts per week is not a bad starting point, but that number could vary depending on your niche, audience, and content availability.  Just remember that the more quality content you produce the better chance you'll have of increasing your organic traffic and rankings.

  • Can I use AI to write articles for me?

Technology is evolving quickly - so my answer to this as of April 2023 is no.  AI writing tools tend to have a repetitive sentence structure, use random facts (that aren't facts), reference stats that don't exist, spin content that was already written better on other sites and well, lack originality and quality.  My official answer is to use the right AI tools to help you expand your writing or help with SEO keyword density and article topics.  Think of AI as a guide but you're driving the car - a combination of human writing and AI guiding to me is the major today.

That's all I got - blog please - it will help your site traffic!  Good luck and feel free to message me if you have any questions.
