Beware of Affordable SEO Services That May Harm Your Website Ranking

Ryan Stack • Apr 24, 2024

In the quest for online visibility, businesses often fall into the trap of opting for affordable SEO services that promise quick and impressive rankings. While everyone loves a good deal, some of these services employ tactics that are not only unethical but also directly violate Google's spam policies. Understanding the pitfalls of such practices can save your website from sinking into the abyss of search engine results.

Google's stringent spam policies are designed to ensure a fair and valuable search experience for users. Any attempt to manipulate rankings can have serious consequences for your website.  While good "affordable SEO services" do exist out there - it's important to learn what "services and techniques" these companies will use when trying to improve your site's rankings.

Here are several pitfalls tied to affordable SEO services, with reference to Google's spam policies.

Doorways or Backdoor Pages: The Maze Without Real Content

an illustration of doorways or backdoor web pages used for the purpose of ranking

Doorway pages are created to rank highly for specific queries. They lead users to similar pages in user search results, where each result ends up taking the user to essentially the same destination. They trick the search engine into displaying multiple URLs for the same or similar searches, diluting user experience.

According to Google's spam policies, doorways contribute to a poor user experience by leading users to multiple similar pages, all while providing minimal unique content or added value. Ensuring that your website provides unique, valuable content for each query is paramount to compliance with Google's guidelines.

*Tip: If you find the need to create unique content for a specific search phrase like web designers in Hartford, CT, build out a unique page specifically designed to offer a unique experience and information for those in that area - perhaps it could be clients you've created websites for in Hartford, local business events you may attend, meeting times for those in the area, etc.

What you would want to avoid is simply copying the service page and replacing a few words with the location "hartford".  According to Googles recommendations - make sure the page is NEEDED and the information is specific, unique and helpful to users.

Additionally, make sure you have a clear organized hierarchy for the new pages you're developing.  You may want to include the new pages in a site map, add breadcrumbs and show a clear path to access that new page from the home page.

Hidden Text and Links: The Invisible Deception

The tactic of using hidden text or links (e.g., white text on a white background, positioning text off-screen) is a direct violation of Google's guidelines. This method attempts to game the system by including keywords or links that are invisible to the visitor but are indexed by search engines.

Google's algorithms are designed to detect and penalize this deceptive practice. Websites caught using hidden text or links risk severe penalties, including demotion in rankings or removal from the search index. Examples of this include:

  • placing white text on white background
  • hiding text behind images
  • making text so small its hard to see

Keyword Stuffing: The Overflow of Irrelevance

Keyword stuffing involves overloading a webpage with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google search results. This results in a negative user experience, making the content spammy and unhelpful for users.

Google advises against this practice, as it leads to a poor user experience and undermines the quality of search results. Instead, focus on creating useful, information-rich content that uses keywords appropriately and in context.

Link Spam: The Untrustworthy Endorsements

This by far is the most common thing we see from affordable SEO services. Buying or selling links that pass PageRank can lead users to irrelevant pages and dilutes the quality of search results. Affordable SEO services may offer to buy links in bulk to artificially inflate the perceived authority of a website.

Google's spam policies explicitly prohibit manipulative link practices. Websites found participating in link schemes face stiff penalties, including a loss in search visibility. Building genuine, high-quality backlinks through credible relationships and offering valuable content is the recommended strategy.

For years local SEO companies have use spammy link building techniques and have balanced on the line of risk vs reward. It's been our policy to avoid paying for links as well as building sites we own to build links (PBN's). Think of links like a review - it should be genuine, transparent and earned bc your content was helpful, a website wanted to recommend your site etc - it should not be manipulated.  Avoid Local SEO Services that offer spammy link building practices.

Scaled Content Abuse: The Dilemma of AI-Generated Spam

The rapid production of large amounts of AI-generated, unoriginal content that provides no real value to the user is another critical area of concern. These services create low-quality articles en masse, aimed purely at search engine rankings rather than user satisfaction.

Google values original, high-quality content that serves a genuine purpose to the user. Mass-produced, low-value content can result in a penalty, negatively impacting website visibility.

Steering Clear of SEO Pitfalls

Falling for the allure of affordable SEO services that use dubious tactics can result in significant harm to your website's credibility and ranking. Adherence to Google's spam policies not only ensures compliance but also aligns with the best practices for creating a valuable and user-friendly web presence. Focus on ethical SEO strategies that build your site's reputation organically, even if it takes more time. Affordable SEO Services do exist - just make sure you hire a company that uses ethical, effective practices!
